FOR ALL OF US WHO HAVE SEARCHED FOR OURSELVES IN THE 'GREATER STORY' AND HAD TO TAKE ON A SOUL-KILLING ROLE TO BE INCLUDED...

FEMMEVANGELICAL SUPPORTS THE HOPE, LOVE AND RISK IT TAKES TO RESTORE OUR FAITH;  EMPOWER OUR BELIEF; AND CREATE A WORLD OF EQUALITY, FREEDOM AND WHOLENESS FOR ALL PEOPLE.

A Transformed Faith

"One day you wake up, and the old patterns of belief fit the person you've become like the clothes you've outgrown. You long for a new way of being, a new map to find the God who looks and feels and sounds so very unlike the old fire-breathing, finger-wagging God of your evangelical days. And you wonder, 'What comes next? Is any of it worth saving? How do I build a new framework for my faith?'

This is how my friend Brittney Cooper, Asst. Prof. of Gender Studies and Africana Studies at Rutgers University, Co-founder of Crunk Feminist Collective, and Contributing Writer to Salon, put it.

Many of us grew up in religious traditions that impressed strict parameters around who we could be, what we could believe, and how we were to behave. We were taught that people different from us were going to hell, and that we were sinful wretches who didn't deserve mercy. We had to be good girls and boys for the patriarchy who set the rules and monitored our adherence, and who still often set the tone for acceptance in society and politics today.

God made women secondary, so you can't hold certain leadership roles or be a feminist. You can't start an adult life before getting married. God hates divorce, so you can't make the choices best for you. You surely can't be gay. Don't dare engage with other "heathen" religions. You can't explore the intellectual world because at some point, you might know too much to believe. If you're true to your authentic self, you might stop being "saved."

Because of the disconcerting disconnect between the old rules and our real lives and sense of justice, many people are leaving formal religion behind.

We think we've walked away, but deeply entrenched teachings and admonishments still incubate fear, self-doubt, stereotypes, and dangerous assumptions within us, holding us back from reaching our God-given potential and standing up for others. Yet, no matter how far we roam to find encouragement and confidence, studies show that our faith is still important to us.

Femmevangelical supports your journey into the redemption of your faith and the application of its love into the real world. The good news is that God desires equality, freedom and wholeness for all people, and we are not made to live under oppression of any kind.

Femmevangelical takes the radical promise of the "good news" that the dissident Jesus modeled for us all (people of all faiths and none) and parlays it into stories, devotionals, practices, and meditations to recapture the promise of 'resurrection' for humanity and the hope for a better world. It looks deeply at news headlines and popular culture through the lens of faithful social justice.

Understanding the realities of our history and re-imagining our faith can allow us to organize under a modern, inclusive frame of values in which we can demand change, lift up "the least of these", and lead our communities to a greater vision.
